The Planning Department is responsible for writing the plan with the inclusion of input from State and County agencies and the general public.
Maui County has hired consultant PlanPacific Inc. of Oahu and Chris Hart & Partners of Maui to aid with the drafting of the plan.
In addition to the public agencies' and the public's input, General Plan Advisory Committees (GPACs) have been established for each island to comment, advise, and provide recommendations to the Planning Director on the plan.
The plan is subsequently reviewed by the Planning Commissions (Maui, Molokai and Lanai) who in turn provide their proposed revisions and recommendations, and those made by the General Plan Advisory Committees, to the County Council.
It is then the County Council's responsibility to adopt the General Plan by ordinance.
